Kaworu was not human. He was the 17th Angel, the Last Angel, Tabris. SEELE found him and found out about him being an Angel. They called him "Kaworu Of The Seashore" and eradicated his past. They then sent him to NERV as the Fifth Child. SEELE wanted NERV to fight Kaworu with Eva Shogoki, a.k.a. The Clone Of Lillith. Eva Shogoki was a direct clone of Lillith and can therefor be considered an Angel. SEELE wanted the Third Impact to occur.
However, when arriving at the seashore, he met the Third Child, Shinji Ikari. They soon became friends, even though Shinji didn't open up very much and Kaworu spoke in a strange way. The two showered together after a synchronization test and that's when Kaworu made his first approach; He put his hand over Shinji's. Shinji didn't reject Kaworu, but just blushed deeply. This is also when Kaworu first said "I love you" to Shinji. Later on, Shinji slept over at Kaworu's and they talked. This is when Shinji really opened up to Kaworu about his true feelings towards the world, towards his father. Kaworu fell in love with Shinji and Shinji fell in love with Kaworu.
However, Kaworu was an Angel and had a mission, to reach Adam and retrieve him. The next day, he took over Eva Nigoki. Since he was an Angel, he could block Zeppelin's soul out and take over it without even entering it with the entry plug. With the help of Eva Nigoki ge started to descent towards Central Dogma and Heaven's Door. Shinji arrived inside of Eva Shogoki and there was a struggle. While Shinji was battling Eva Nigoki, Kaworu opened up the electronic lock of Heaven's Door and proceeded through the door, entering the room where Lillith (whom everyone thought was Adam) was kept. Kaworu realized that if was in act not Adam but Lillith hanging there and also that there was only one breed that could survive. Therefor, he gave up and let Shinji defeated Eva Nigoki. He then left Shinji grab hold of him and told him that only one of them could survive and that he wanted that person to be Shinji. His last words were "Because of you, my life had a meaning". After saying those words there was a long silence and then Shinji plopped Kaworu's head off.
