Toji Suzuhara lived a normal life until the day Shinji Ikari came into his life. He lived with his sister and had a friend called Kensuke. In school, he was always fighting with the class rep. Hikari, who had a secret crush on him.

But during a battle against an Angel, Shinji and Eva Shogoki destroyed many houses and wounded many people. One of them was Toji's sister. She was put into hospital. Toji visited her every day, making sure that she was okay. At first, Toji was mad at Shinji and punched him in the school yard. But he later returned to apologize, followed by Kensuke, and the three of them became friends. One day, NERV declared him the Fourth Child and made a proporsition: special treatment for his sister if he'd pilot Eva Unit 03.

However, Eva Unit 03 did not have a soul. The moment Toji entered in the entry plug and prepared for test fighting, Bardiel, the 13th Angel, took over Eva Unit 03. It contained no soul, so it was an easy target. Toji was locked inside by a strong spider-web like substance and had to watch as Bardiel battled Eva Shogoki.

However, when Shinji got to know that Bardiel had taken over Eva Unit 03 and it was indeed a pilot inside, he refused to battle Eva Unit 03, even though he didn't even know who was inside. Gendo Ikari let the Dummy Plug System, a system to take over the control of an Eva, making the pilot unable to control it's actions, activate and took control over Eva Shogoki. He then let Eva Shogoki go berserk on Eva Unit 03, completely demolishing and devastating it. Shinji could only watch as Eva Shogoki removed Eva unit 03's entry plug and squished it in its hand.

However, Toji survived, barely, and was put into hospital for a period of time. He recovered and was not assigned any more missions for of NERV or SEELE. He never made an official appearance in the series again. The last time he was on the show was in episode 26, when everyone appeared inside of Shinji's mind and congratulate him. Of course, he was also in the short scene clip of Shinji and all of his friends in Tokyo-3 in EoE.
