Just like Shinji, Asuka was the son of two scientists. Her mother's name was Zeppelin Sohryu Langley. Asuka was born in Germany, but later moved to Japan, Tokyo-3 and in with Misato and Shinji during the battle with the Angels. Her father's name is unknown. Asuka's father abandoned her and her mother when Asuka was very young. Her mother started spending more time with her work and neglecting Asuka. Asuka was chosen as the Second Child, one to be trained into an Eva pilot. She ran home to tell her mother about it but her mother didn't care. One day, Zeppelin went insane and was put in an insanitarium. The nurses said that she probably went insane since she had spent all of her time on work and neglected her own daughter. When Zeppelin went insane, she had a doll that she called Asuka. She believed the dool to be Asuka and fed it, nursed it and talked to it. Zeppelin committed suicide shortly after that, hanging herself from the ceiling. At the funeral, Asuka's grand mother cried and told Asuka that it was okay to cry. But Asuka said that she didn't feel any pain, that she was independent and could take care of herself. Asuka's father returned, but abandoned her again. Asuka was sent off to life with a foster family.
The real reason behind Zeppelin's insanity was kept secret. She had been the original pilot of Eva Nigoki. But she rejected it and tried to escape. However, her mind was not intact and she went insane. When she died, her soul was used as the soul of Eva Nigoki. Even after Zeppelin's death, she watched over Asuka. During the battle against SEELE's forces in The End Of Evangelion, Eva Nigoki's soul took over and protected Asuka. However, it was ultimately defeated by the Eva Series.
Asuka's childhood made her afraid of showing what she really felt. She hid behind a facade. She acted obnoxious and childish and pretended like she didn't care about others. For example, she'd always yell at people. But she wasn't all that good either. She always wanted to be the superior one. I.e. in Episode 9 - "With One Accord In A Dlash - Both Of You, Dance Like You Want To Win", she took charge in the first battle against Israfel and tried to defeat it all by herself. She always didn't allow Rei to go out, even though Rei was more qualified for the second battle against Israfel.
Asuka was in love with Shinji, even though she didn't admit it directly. However, during The End Of Evangelion, she said that she wanted him, but only if he was entirely hers. Shinji did kiss her and masturbate while watching her, but he never really loved her. The only ones in his lives he ever truly loved were his mother, Yui Ikari, and Kaworu Nagisa, the 17th Angel/Tabris.
Asuka believed that the only reason the had to live was to pilot Eva. When she was mind raped by Arael, she broke down and wanted to die since she thought that she didn't have any reason left to live when her sync ratio was set to 0.
